Unit 3.2-Market Research

Analysis of Similar Products

I will be making a podcast and so needed to research the different layouts of podcasts.
Here are three:

This is a podcast on BBC Radio 4: http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/did
Chris Packham:
This podcast is just one person presenting the podcast. This person is interviewing someone on their own. The questions asked are kind of personal, about his childhood. The presenter is being friendly and encouraging during the interview and is therefore getting a lot of information. The music is being played in clips instead of full songs to space between the interview so the interview doesn't seem as long.

This is a football podcast:
http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/audio/2013/oct/14/football-weekly-podcast-england-poland-world-cup-brazil
Starts off with making the football news seem like stories. A group of people talking to each other as if it is an everyday chat. No interview in this podcast but it is getting all the big headlines out there and is talking about them in detail.

This is a film review podcast:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/kermode
This is presented by two people, it is like they are just have a chat together. There is an interview with Tom Hanks and Paul Greengrass about their new film 'Captain Phillips'. After the interview, they give their opinions on other films that they have seen like The Fifth Estate, Romeo and Juliet, Baggage Claim, Le Week-End, Machete Kills and more.

Based on these, I believe I will be doing a film review podcast.

BBC 5 Live
Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's Film Reviews

Daniel Radcliffe 29th November

BBC 5 Live has done many film review podcasts and this time it was with an interview with Daniel Radcliffe. The Format of this podcast is a discussion between two presenters Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo thus making it presenter led. Simon Mayo talks to Daniel about him in Kill your Darlings and Mark Kermode reviews Saving Mr. Banks, Carrie, Free Birds, Jeune et Jolie, The Best Man Holiday, Day of the Flowers and Leviathan. Before the interview they spend the time talking about people's comments/e-mails. They play an audio clip from the film that their interviewee stars in. During the interview, Daniel is asked semi-open questions which is that is specific but allows Daniel to expand on his answers. This makes him comfortable enough to answer the questions as if talking to a friend. The interviewer seems to have researched about the film as well as Daniel Radcliffe, it shows in how the questions are structured, specific and accurate. After the interview, they discuss the downfall of the difference between films and TV shows. Because of all these factors, the Genre of the podcast is both a Special Interest (Films) and Educational.

The Guardian
Football Weekly with James Richardson

Football Weekly Extra: Manchester United beaten at home again.

The podcast starts off with football headlines that they make sound like stories, for example; 'Villainous Vincent Tan hires baby-faced assassin to go with his black leather gloves'. During the time the voice-over is reading out the headlines, there is intro music playing in the background. This podcast is Presenter led by a group of presenters instead of just two like radio 5 live. There is four presenters in this podcast that seem comfortable enough with each other that it seems like an everyday discussion. The presenters try to balance their views and the facts of what is happening with Manchester United but overall is tending to be a little bit more biased. This podcast's Genre is Special Interest, as people who don't like football will not be interested.

Radio 4
Comedy of the Week

Comedy: The 15 Minute Musical: 25th Dec 13

This podcast is definitely not like the other podcasts I have analysed. As the title suggests, it really is just a 15 minute musical. I suppose you could say that the format is song linked or ballad-styled since, well, it's a musical. Since the whole podcast is just meant to be funny, and in my opinion it is, the Genre of this podcast would be Special Interest. The interest in this case being Comedy. I suppose in some way it is impartial because the musical is about 'Julian' and how some people like him and some people hate him.

Absolute Radio
Frank Skinner on Absolute Radio

Best of 1

There are three presenters having a discussion. The podcast isn't about anything specific which is why the Genre is a Discussion. The format of this podcast is presenter led. Since this is a discussion then most of the topics mentioned will most probably be opinionated and thus be biased. Thus it would have a subjective representation. Frank seems to be the one to take the lead as he is the one that starts/changes the topic. Whilst the other presenters just seem to join in the topic whilst adding their own opinions. Every time their is a subject change, a clip of music is played with a voice over saying 'The Frank Skinner Show'.

The Xfm
Josh Widdicombe Podcast

Episode 46-A very merry Christmas to you, it's the last podcast of the year.

There is music in the background, with their voices over it. The format would be narrated over the music. The Genre for this podcast is a Discussion. They are discussing Christmas topics whilst adding a little bit of comedy and anecdotes for the humor of the listeners. The podcast seems to be opinion based whilst making anecdotes almost all the time.

Radio 1
Greg James-That's What He Said

The Last Podcast...of the year 20 Dec 13

The introduction to the podcast is the intro music with the main presenter Greg James singing along to a song but the lyrics were just sentences that are used in conversations. The topics on this podcast is Christmas based. The format for this podcast is presenter led but it does contain some music and song links. The podcast is very opinionated and subjective as most everyday conversations are.
